Profit must be paired with purpose

Over the past 10 years, through my work as a business strategy & commercial consultant, I’ve helped over 15 start-ups get through and grow during the most fragile seed stage. I saw the sheer ambition of CoGo’s mission as an exciting new challenge to dive into, where I could add the structure, support and strategy needed to get to the next stage of growth and beyond.

There aren’t many start-ups I’ve come across like CoGo that create value for businesses and consumers while also making positive changes towards the environment and society.

I truly believe that, if done right, CoGo could become the most impactful business in the world.

I understand that people can feel overwhelmed by the enormity of climate change, but CoGo embraces that and shows the user that lots of individual behaviour changes can and does add up to huge impacts, helping us all stay motivated to do more!

There’s no doubt that media reporting on the negative impacts of business has helped to bring it to the forefront of our minds. Including the 2013 tragedy of Rana Plaza - the garment factory that collapsed in Bangladesh taking the lives of over 1,000 workers in the fast-fashion industry - but sadly, there’s many more.

It is clear that businesses cannot keep going at the same velocity and in the same direction. Profit must be paired with purpose.

Fortunately, there are many amazing brands changing the game by championing people and the planet at the core of everything they do. They just haven’t been very easy to find or trust for the newly switched-on, or eager to switch conscious consumer - until CoGo!

In the last 3 months, we’ve built up a solid community of hundreds of consumers in the UK and we now have over 65 businesses on board. The main challenge as a tech-for-good start-up has been trying to grow both sides of the market at the same time. To keep users happy we need more businesses on board, but to get businesses onboard we need users to illustrate the demand. It’s the classic chicken and egg situation. So, we thank all the early adopters - that’s you! - for believing in our mission and hanging in there while we expand across London and the UK.

We’ve learnt a lot in the first few months and continue to learn and iterate. Einstein was right ‘once you stop learning, you start dying’ and dying is not in our strategy!

I’m most excited for when we, as users, will get to use the CoGo app to track all of our spending and we’ll be able to see what our ethical share of our wallet is, and how we can increase it! A bit like an ethical Fitbit.

We’re building a game-changer that is not just another app, but a movement that will ultimately change the narrative of success for businesses.
